Methods of Comparing + 4071 Classifications

چکیده
The word "classification" can be used in a broad sense to include various types of diagrams that indicate either the relative degrees of similarities or the lines of descent, as well as the traditional Linnean classification (32). For example, DuPraw (12) referred to his bivariate scatter diagrams (based upon canonical variate analysis) as being a form of "non-Linnean classification." The present paper is mainly concerned with methods for comparing classification where the objects under study (OTUs) (44) are placed into nonoverlapping classes either at a single level or in a hierarchy. However, the other applications must be kept in mind since ordination analyses and analyses based upon graph theory are becoming routine in both systematics and ecology. It is desirable to be able to compare these and measure the extent to which each preserves information about the patterns of similarity among the OTUs. It is possible to classify the various approaches to comparing classifications in several ways. Some methods are applicable only to traditional classifications, whereas others are applicable to classifications in a very broad sense. Jardine & Sibson (25) distinguish three types of situations in which one would wish to compare two or more classifications: (a) testing independence (such as testing whether a classification based on soil type is independent of a classification based on the growth form of the plants found on these soils), (b) measuring dependence (for example, one may wish to measure the degree to which a classification based upon one set of variables can be predicted based on another set), and (c) measurement of congruence of classifications (testing, for example, whether or not classifications based upon larval characters are congruent with classifications based upon adult characters). In this paper, we are mainly concerned with congruence.

Identification of GS 4104 as an orally bioavailable prodrug of the influenza virus neuraminidase inhibitor GS 4071.
GS 4071 is a potent carbocyclic transition-state analog inhibitor of influenza virus neuraminidase with activity against both influenza A and B viruses in vitro. GS 4116, the guanidino analog of GS 4071, is a 10-fold more potent inhibitor of influenza virus replication in tissue culture than GS 4071. In this study we determined the oral bioavailabilities of GS 4071, GS 4116, and their respectiv...
متن کاملData Mining in Networks of Differentially Expressed Genes during Sow Pregnancy
Small to moderate gains in Pig fertility can mean large returns in overall efficiency, and developing methods to improve it is highly desirable. High fertility rates depend on completion of successful pregnancies. To understand the molecular signals associated with pregnancy in sows, expression profiling experiments were conducted to identify differentially expressed genes in ovary and myometri...
متن کاملAsse Ssment of the Role of Primary Health Care Services in Improving General Health in Chatrood Village
SUMMARY The purpose of this study was to assess the role of primary health services in improving general health of children in chat rood villages, Kerman, Iran, by comparing growth and nutritional status of 0-5 year children in 1980 and 1984. Nutritional status was assessed, using anthropometric methods; in 1980, 1981, 1982, and 1984. The results were as follows; 1)between 1980 and 1982, t...
متن کاملThe Development of Identity as a Privileged Relation in C lassification: When Very Similar is Just Not Similar Enough
Young children classify by overall similarity the same stimuli that older children and adults classify by part identity. This developmental trend is typically discussed in terms of a shift from comparing wholes to comparing parts. The present study investigates if the trend reflects more than one developing ability. The results of Experiment 1 showed that, in the absence of a part identity rela...
